Nature and surroundings
The national park "Sierra y cañyones" de Guara is a promontory of the Spanish Pyrenees. It is a jagged limestone mountain range, cut by deep gorges with clear streams and dozens of meters high rock walls. The highest peak is the Guara (2077 m). Bird - and nature lovers will find here a quiet and rugged nature with a large variety of special birds and plants. In particular, the griffon vulture and the vulture and sometimes the rare bearded vulture circle around. In addition, along the Rio Vero, a number of prehistoric sites with petroglyphs can be visited. Around the village the vegetation is Mediterranean with almond and olive groves. Southward in the valley of the Rio Vero are the vineyards for the renowned Somontano wines. The area is one of Spain's most important DO regions and a bodega visit is heartily recommended. Despite high summer temperatures (sometimes as high as 35°C), the mountainous area is always beautifully green due to the many rivers and occasional showers.
