On the Dokkumer Trekvaart, on the old switchyard near the village of Driezum, this former toll house stands as a nature house. Rebuilt in 1913 as a warehouse and now suitable as a cottage for two people. The nature house has a living room with a 2-person cabin bed, kitchen with microwave and dishwasher, bathroom with bath, separate shower and toilet. Upstairs is a sauna for free use. Behind the cottage is a terrace with garden chair set and barbecue. Parking is available right next door. The nature house does stand directly on the through road (60 km/hour) to Dokkum. The cottage itself is less suitable for absolute peace and quiet, but within five minutes you are right in a nature reserve for cycling and walking. Opposite the nature house is the Trekvaart with its own fishing pier, where a boat may be moored for 2 nights.
Nature and surroundings
The area is known for the so-called coulisse landscape; a semi-open landscape bordered by tree walls and hedges. The area is best explored by walking and cycling. Often across meadows, where no motorized traffic comes, on shell and sandy paths. The nature house is a good starting point for mudflat hiking, bird watching in the National Park Lauwersmeer. The Elfstedenstadje Dokkum is worth a visit: the Bonifatiuskapel, windmills, atmospheric city center with canals, pleasant shopping, terraces, eating out and the Admiralty House. Throughout the year there are nature excursions in the area. For children there are several climbing and ball parks nearby, an indoor swimming pool in Dokkum and fun museums open all year round. Dokkum can be reached in five minutes. Leeuwarden and the ferry ports to Schiermonnikoog and Ameland can be reached in 30 minutes by car.
