Nature and surroundings
Madeira has long been a very popular vacation spot for nature lovers. Many tourists return on a regular basis. The island has a pleasant year-round climate, a particularly beautiful floral beauty and virtually no crime, making it one of the safest places on earth today, where you can still walk around carefree. Madeira is a hiker's paradise. The irrigation system goes through artificial channels called levadas, these have a total length of 2150 kilometers. The hiking trails run, for the most part, along the levadas. It is an excellent way to see the beautiful landscape of Madeira. There are easy, medium and difficult walks to do. The village is in a beautiful location in an area of farmland, vineyards and gardens. All the cottages have stunning views over the hills of Calheta to the Atlantic Ocean. Calheta means "little beach" in Portuguese. The village is one of the oldest parishes on the island and was founded on the first of June 1502 by the primitive colonials. In the middle of the village is an old sugar cane factory, established in 1901, where they produce honey and "aguardente" rum using old steam machines. The village is also known for the huge variety of fish caught along this coast. The landlord recommends a boat trip, where there is a good chance of seeing whales and dolphins. It is also beautiful to see Madeira from the sea.
