Nature and surroundings
Nature reserve De Borkeld consists of young forest, large moors, loam pits, fields, grasslands and even a piece of raised bog. The forest was planted between 1930 and 1950. Here you will also find the largest juniper thicket in the Netherlands. The terrain is sloping: the highest peak, the Friezenberg lies at forty meters, the lowest point at thirteen meters above sea level. Several trails marked with posts have been set out by the Forestry Commission. The Borkeld is also an archaeological reserve. 13,000 years ago hunter-gatherers were already active here. Evidence was left by them in the form of stone axes, skin scrapers and other stone tools. The prehistoric burial mounds and settlement sites that have been found are between 6,000 and 4,000 years old. In 1997, a dozen burial mounds were restored by the National Service for Archaeological Research. The clay pits in the area were created by clay mining for making bricks. They are five or more meters deep, and the specific conditions have created a special plant community. As early as the 18th century, a "tile factory" was located here whose products were in great demand in Twente. The A1 freeway was built through the area in the 1970s. At the insistence of conservationists, the special natural value of the juniper field was taken into account. This is evident from a bend in the road south of Rijssen.
