Nature and surroundings
The nature house is located on the border of to the south the Wieden and to the north the Weerribben. Together they form the National Park Weerribben-Wieden. National Park Weerribben-Wieden is the largest low moorland swamp of Western Europe. Natuurmonumenten manages the southern part: De Wieden. This wetland nature reserve in the Kop van Overijssel is an oasis of space and peace. Here you will find ponds and ditches, vast reedlands, hay meadows full of flowers and dense marsh forests. As you sail and wander in the Weerribben and Wieden you see trees, water, birds and endless reed beds: nature looks untouched. But appearances are deceptive, because every meter of land here is man-made. The extraction of peat changed the landscape into a swampy marshland. In National Park Weerribben-Wieden you can walk, bike and sail (for example with a whisper boat), but canoeing is the most beautiful. Between walls of reeds you sail further and further into the green, until you only hear your own paddles and the singing of reed warblers and warblers. Mute swans and purple herons fly through the air, some splashing in the water could be an otter.
