This was once a typical sustainable Umbrian olive farm. The ground floor was farm functions with a huge bread oven while above lived three families. Abandoned for some 10 years, I documented, tore down and rebuild it then recovered its' 300 olive trees. Our Casale respects a historical 'recupero'. We reused its' original stones & terracotta tiles, replaced chestnut beams & doors, introduced hardwood floors in the living & bedrooms. We finished the internal walls with breathable coccio pesto & calce based colors and introduced bathrooms, foundations & seismic measures which the poor old Casale never had as well as well equipped kitchen. We walls of stone & K24 terra cotta hollow core blocks are thick so it's naturally cool in the summer, there is no AC but we provide fans. We also have a private pool (13x6). Interiors are furnished with antiques from my prior life and my designs with antique quilts. It is as simple as the farmers lived bettered by modern day comforts.
Nature and surroundings
Umbria is called the green heart of Italy. Our Casale is sited on a high natural terrace overlooking the entire Tiber River Valley with its WWF Oasis of Alviano down below. Under the terrace are 3 Etruscan caves. We are on the border of Umbria so our panorama is from Monte Cimino, Lazio to Monte Amiata, Tuscany. You'll enjoy your coffee with the sun rising behind the Castello di Poggio that illuminates the Etrucan hilltop towns across the valley, have lunch while being eye level with peregrine falcons hunting far below. Then there is aperitif time with spectacular sunsets behind Monte Amiata...then magical dusk watching hundreds of Etruscan towns like Orvieto, Bagnoregio, Castiglione in Tevernina, Bomarzo light up! Our Casale is surrounded by olive, almond, apricot, cherry, pear & mirto trees with many antique roses. You may use our herb garden; sage, rosemary, thyme, serpintillo, parsley & cilantro. Walk 1 km to Guardea, 18km-Orvieto, 25-Todi, 1hr-Rome, 2hr-Florence.
