Nature house with large garden and view of the nature reserve located at Assels (Drongen) near the old Leie between Ghent and Sint-Martens-Latem.
Nature and surroundings
The nature reserve is an island between Drongen and Afsnee, accessible by only one access road. The Oude Leie meanders through the landscape and forms a natural boundary between the low-lying meadows and the higher-lying donk. The meersen landscape consists of species-rich grasslands, interlaced with ditches. What species are characteristic of the nature reserve? Black-tailed godwits and lapwings nest here every spring. In the short vegetation they accompany their downy chicks on their first search for food. Other breeding birds include shoveler, creak and tufted duck in the canals, wood warbler and reed bunting in the more rugged parts, reed warbler in the reed bed at the Butter Pit and kingfisher in the bank of the same Butter Pit. In winter, the area serves as a foraging area for snipe.
