Nature and surroundings
A beautiful and mysterious piece of nature where you can experience beautiful walking and cycling routes. The small river Reest winds its way through a region where flowery meadows, old hedgerows, ash trees, heath and forest alternate. The nature reserves around the Reest, managed by the Drents Landschap and Landschap Overijssel, are unique. Amid the hay meadows, fields, heaths and forests, many special plants and animals are found. The Reest valley lies on the border between the provinces of Overijssel and Drenthe. The Reest valley can roughly be divided into three core areas, each with its own identity. Around IJhorst-De Wijk are the estates along the Reest. In Oud-Avereest-Rabbinge there are many characteristic farms and esge hamlets with hay meadows, ash trees, coppice forest, heath and fens. The Staphorsterbos is a large contiguous forest area with heath and fens.
