We renovated, designed and decorated this characteristic house ourselves. It stands on our private property of 3 hectares which is one of the darkest places in France. In a special "heavenly" spot you can admire the starry sky. The terrain is adventurous and varied: a private stream with 'plunge pool' (9 m2) and waterfalls; trees such as ash, oak, beech, apple, pear, medlar; yellow broom, blackthorn, lots of thyme; meadows, forest paths, sitting areas. Layout of the house: upper floor similar to the path with double bed, landing + 'desk', toilet. Middle floor: living room with French doors and open kitchen, loft, front door, outdoor terrace. In the living room there is a wood stove + wood supply. The long windows offer unobstructed views over the rolling terrain. Floor downstairs: again level with the path, 2x single beds, shower and sink, toilet. We have 3 wells, 1 well provides its own spring water. A few pieces of furniture in the house are homemade, as well as most of the art on the wall.
Nature and surroundings
The house stands on a dead-end forest path (unpaved!!) in the hills at 600 meters altitude. The nearest town, with a beautiful old part, is Lamastre (6km). There are stores, markets, cozy terraces and restaurants. Here starts the cycle route La Dolce Via, a former railroad of 90 km, to be cycled in stages; highly recommended! The area is quiet (no hectic tourism), very hilly and green, with rivers, plateaus, valleys, old volcanoes and spectacular views. The highest mountain in the Ardèche the Mezenc (1756m), and the Gerbier de Jonc (Loire rises there), are within driving distance. There are numerous walks in the area, from short to long, and often well trodden. Swimming is possible in Retourtour (4km), Labatie-d'Andaure (!) near Désaignes (village charactère) and Lac du Devesset, near St. Agrève. Near St. Peray is a spectacular ruin village Chateau de Crusol, very worthwhile. The cities of Valence and Lyon can be reached in just over five quarters of an hour.
