Relax and imagine yourself in the old days on the estate De Heerlijkheid Hemmen in the Betuwe. The washhouse from 1832 was used for the baron's laundry at the former Hemmen castle. Upon entering, you immediately feel the atmosphere: a beautiful old stone floor, a simple and tasteful interior and you sleep in a box bed of 1.20 by 2 m. From one window you look out on the Linge, from the other you see striking walnut trees. The washhouse is heated by a wood-fired stove. The toilet is flushed with a scoop bucket. There is no electricity and running water. There are candle lights, solar lamps and, if desired, a cozy fire in the stove. Washing is done the old-fashioned way with a washcloth or on request with a 20 liter solar shower under a tree. You make coffee on a camping gas stove. Coffee, tea, fruit and a welcome drink are provided. On request and for a fee, two additional people can sleep in the loft: 2x 90 by 200 cm.
Nature and surroundings
In Hemmen you can enjoy hiking in an open, small-scale landscape. Here the Betuwe is at its most beautiful. The estate is bisected by the Linge River. The Rhine and the Waal are just a stone's throw away. Along the Linge you walk to the park. From the ruins of the castle, looking across the pond, you see an oak avenue a kilometer long. Furthermore, the castle garden is an oasis of peace with thousands of flowers and plants. There are many cycling and walking routes including the Linge path. In spring you walk past the pink and white blossoms, in summer past the cherry orchards, and in autumn the orchards are full of pears and apples. Be sure to walk to the village of Hemmen with its picturesque little square with white houses. You can have a delicious lunch in the Brasserie there. And with the ferry you are on the moraine of Wageningen with its special arboreta, museums and the historic hotel De Wereld. Wageningen is 5 and Arnhem and Nijmegen just under 30 kilometers away.
