Unexpectedly beautiful sight awaits visitors to the Bauxite Geological Park. The area looks unreal with a unique landscape. This is in fact a former open-pine bauxite mine near Gant. After the mine was closed, the territory around it turned into a favorite destination for Hungarians as well as their guests from other countries. Here you will come across an educational train trail with more than 10 stations, providing even the tiniest detail about the history and geology behind this amazing place. The museum is called Balas Jeno and is situated on top of the mine peak!
Lake Valence is also near the capital. It is one of the largest lakes in Hungary and is an endorheic type, which means that no water flows in or out of it. The most interesting fact about Valence is its water temperature. It is among the warmest lakes in Europe due to its relatively shallow waters and the local climate. Right above the lakes you will see a set of mountains – the Valence Mountains. They are part of the Transdanubian Mountains which stretch to the west of Central Hungary.
Activities
Hiking is a very popular activity in these parts of Europe and Hungary is no different. Hungarians love hiking and it is not unusual for families to turn it into a monthly tradition to hike through a forest, a mountain or a canyon. The Pills and Visegrad Mountains are a range located near Visegrad town. Although many people by mistake used to think that these two mountains are the same one, the geology, nature and even history of the mountains have proved otherwise. The Buda Hills in the Visegrad Mountain are among the more popular places to hike. They present amazing views of the surrounding territories too!
Among the most remarkable places in this part of Hungary is the Gemenc Forest. This is a unique formation and a protected area since more than 40 years ago. Every year the territory of this forest is flooded. Therefore, a special variety of plants and animals have made this their home. These include falcons, black storks, herons, deer and wild boars, as well as many more. The park is crossed by numerous trails and you can learn a lot about Hungarian nature as the trails are marked and equipped with educational boards. Except on foot, you can also explore this park by canoe.
