Explore the region’s nature
One of the best places to enjoy nature is the Discovery Park in Diekirch. There are 12 interactive points where you will be able to learn a lot more than you have expected from a nature discovery park. The water, nature, fields, fauna and flora have their unique characteristics which in fact have turned this place into a beautiful natural oasis.
The town of Diekirch is also situated along the banks of river Sure. Surrounded by a group of hills, it looks as if the town is embraced by nature. The town used to be a Celtic stronghold, therefore its history is amazing and thoroughly presented in one of many history museums located across the town. In the older parts of the town, you can also visit a church dating from the 6th century.
The hills are also hiding another amazing spot – the Celtic dolmen. This is a stone tomb situated on the bank of river Sure, which can be reached through a circular trail (7km long) from the center. The locals also refer to this place as the Deiwelselter or the Altar of the Devil.
Activities
Around the area of Diekirch there is a lot to do. Near the water and in it, you can sunbathe on the sunny green fields, or canoe and explore the water. Hiking is also popular with a large area of marked paths crossing the region. The paths will take you through the forests and long the rivers. Cycling and mountain biking are adored by the locals! You can do a biking tour or you can conquer some of the 600 km of paths just for the sport!
One of the best ways to spend a day near the town of Diekirch is to head to the history museums. After you have finished with the history lessons, head to the local restaurants and enjoy some of the distinctive cuisine such as grilled prawns, stuffed meat and fillet mignon. Afterwards, burn off the delicious calories by taking one of the hiking paths starting from the town and ending on top of the hills overlooking Diekirch! One of the most famous festivals in Luxembourg happens in Diekirch for 5 days in July. There is music, local beer and a lot of entertainment!
