The nature of the fjords
Did you know that the word “fjord” is in fact Norwegian and has come to serve as a name for this phenomenon? It is a Viking term which translates to “travelling across”. The phenomenon behind the creation of any fjord around the world is the same – massive glaciers going under the sea level. Many locals compare the fjords of Norway to a gigantic replica of the Venice canals.
There are more than 1,000 fjords across Norway and we understand that this might be overwhelming, which is why we have picked the best options according to our team! Geirangerfjord is one of the most famous fjords in the country. It is protected by UNESCO due to its fairytale-like landscape. The fjord is surrounded by almost vertical rocks covered in dense vegetation. There are snow-covered peaks and high waterfalls to explore. De syv søstrene or the Seven Sisters is a stunning waterfall in the area, which is definitely worth the visit!
Nordfjord is another amazing place to visit – a true wild coastal nature! Ice-blue waters and extremely high peaks, this fjord will not disappoint the adventurers among you. Nordfjord is also where you will find Norway’s highest peak – Skåla. Its foot is in the sea, nevertheless it ascends for almost 1,900 m to the sky. On your way to the top you will be passing through Jostedalsbreen National Park.
Activities
Lysefjord is another natural wonder in Norway. This fjord is found on the mountain plateaus Preikestolen and Kjerag. A staircase of 4,444 steps awaits those who wish to see the view from the top. This is the longest staircase in the world, which is made of wood and is also a strenuous exercise where you will defeat an elevation of 700m in less than two hours! If you want to do a long hike we suggest you cross the Kjerag plateau and arrive at Kjerag bolt – a gigantic boulder wedged in a crevasse in Kjerag mountain.
Nordfjord is quite literally covered in hiking trails. All of them provide scenic panoramas and adventure like no else. Dosabu for example is a storm watching cabin on the rocks near Frøya. You can step inside and enjoy the view of the sea!
Except for these few fjords, you can practically explore any fjord you like. Activities such as hiking, canoeing, canyoning, kayaking and rock climbing all present amazing ways to discover the area!
