The province of Avila is centrally located in Spain. It is a dry region in which actually only one larger city can be found, namely the capital of the same name, Avila. A special feature of the city is that the old city centre is surrounded by a medieval city wall with towers and entrance gates. In addition, when you visit this city from your cottage, you can visit various interesting buildings, including various cathedrals. The province of Avila is home to beautiful nature reserves. From your holiday home you can take wonderful walks along one of the large lakes in the region or through the beautiful mountain landscapes in the south of the province.
In the south of the province of Avila lies the mountain area Sierra de Gredos. The Pico Almanzor with its 2592 meters is the highest mountain of this regional park. The mountain area is very rugged and rocky. Against the slopes there are still some coniferous forests to be found, but once above the tree line, the vegetation consists only of small shrubs and herbs. When you visit the mountain area from your cottage, you will encounter real mountain plants and animals, and you will have magnificent views of Avila. Other interesting nature reserves that you can visit from your holiday home are some large lakes. Directly north of the city of Avila lies the Embalse de las Cogotas-Mingorria.
The nature in Avila has a rich flora and fauna. There are many different species of birds of prey, including griffon vulture, snake eagle, black kite and red kite. When you go out from your holiday home, don't forget your binoculars. In the nature reserves of Avila there are hundreds of species of plants. In the woods you can encounter orchids, such as the sole orchid. Insects are also richly represented. On flowery fields and forest edges you can encounter all kinds of colourful butterflies, including mother-of-pearl butterflies, white band sand-eye and small ranger.
