Gran Paradiso National park is a protected area in northwest Italy in the Graian Alps. It is situated in the Gran Paradiso Mountain shared between two regions – Piedmont and Aosta Valley. The history of the park starts way back in the 19th century when the soon-to-be-king Victor Emmanuel wished to preserve the population of the Alpine Ibex. The park was established as a royal hunting ground and a little less than 100 years later it was donated to the government and recognized as an official national park – the first in Italy. Nowadays, the population of ibex continues to thrive in Gran Paradiso with more than 4,000 ibex roaming the land.

As you have probably already guessed, Gran Paradiso Park comprises mostly alpine terrain. Despite being a national park, almost 20% of the park territory is used for agricultural purposes. The interesting part is that 10% is covered by glaciers. There are 57 glaciers which you can hike through, but more on that in the activities section.
A remarkable view is presented to those who take the time and effort to hike to the higher points of the mountain. From some parts even the peaks of Matterhorn and Mont Blanc are visible.
If you decide to stay in our park cottages, don’t forget to visit the Paradisia Alpine Botanical Garden. The garden got its name from the Paradise lily – a flower which grows on the meadows in the park. More than 1,000 plant varieties are available on the garden premises, as well as a butterfly garden!
The paths created for the Ibex in the 19th century, are still used to this day but by visitors to the national park. They are part of the network of trails and tracks on the park premises – there are more than 700 km for you to explore.
The path network crosses 5 protected area valleys, all of which are marked and open year round. However, pay attention to news on the park’s website, as some trails might be temporarily closed due to climatic events. One of the longest paths is the SP460 which starts out of Cuorgne and will take you through two of the five valleys – Spazio Gran Paradiso and Valle Orco.
Cycling and climbing are also other types of physical activity you can try on your vacation. Mountain bikers especially love the area! Our favourite mountain route is definitely the one from Piamprato to Grangia Ciavanassa. The climb is gentle towards the village, after that the descent will pump your blood with adrenaline and finally you will arrive at the scenic lookout over the Piamprato glacial basin.
