Sweden is one of the biggest and wildest Nordic countries. Its nature is one of a kind and draws nature enthusiasts from all over the world. Sarek is the oldest national park in Europe and one of the biggest in Sweden. While Sweden has 13 peaks with altitudes of more than 2,000m, six of them are located on the premises of Sarek National Park.
We know that staying in a national park must sound like a dream, but we promise you it is true! Our cottages are spread across villages and rural areas in the park premises and serve as the perfect starting point for a day of exploring. As most of our clients tend to prefer Sweden for the solitude and quiet it offers, we understand this which is why a completely contactless stay is possible with most hosts.
The park is situated in Northern Sweden but not as north as Abisko National Park. The second highest mountain in the country – Sarektjåkkå – is also part of the park and there are around 100 glaciers in the park, too. This mountain is a complete wilderness paradise – there are no roads crossing it, therefore rest assured that the visit will be quite an adventure.
The lowest point in this mountainous region is Lake Rittajkaure with its modest 477m above sea level. The lake is filled with the waters from the biggest regional river – Rapa River. This river has a glacial origin and crosses the Rapa Valley before it flows into the lake. In fact, more than 30 different glaciers fill up the river; you can imagine how powerful its flow is. The river flow forms many deltas including on its confluences; the most spectacular of them is the Laitaure delta between the river and Lake Laitaure.
Rapa Valley is enormous and covers a decent amount of the park. This is where one of the most amazing views in Sweden can be seen – the gigantic Mount Skierfe looking over the glacial valley – a really breathtaking view.
Hikers love this park, and professionals adore Sarektjåkkå. The whole park is one huge trekking experience, however some aim for the summit. On its south side the steep ascend is reserved only for the most experienced hikers – you should have some expertise when it comes to glacial trekking.
Backcountry trekking is also an alternative – you can roam the wilderness of the park during a day or multi day trip! Sarek-Padjelanta Loop Trail is among the more popular routes. It continues for more than 200 km of ascents and descends through the mountains. It is not suitable for beginners. They should opt for Kvikkjokk Och Sarek Circular Trail – a 112 km trail which travels along creeks and lakes and will provide you with amazing views of the mountain.
Sarek is an important territory for the indigenous Sami tribes. There is a lot to learn from the history and the monuments and information centers in connection with their culture. Alkawari is a small chapel built in the 18th century for the local Sami herders, which is still used today. You can even witness the yearly service held here in July.
