Nature and surroundings
The National Park Drents-Friese Wold is one of the largest contiguous nature reserves in the Netherlands with an area of about 6150 hectares. It is a vast nature reserve with sand drifts and forest as well as heathland. Doldersum is an old brink village dating back to the 13th century. Several Celtic burial mounds have been discovered in the area, indicating that even before the era people lived in this area. The villages of Diever, Vledder, Dwingeloo and Appelscha are all easily accessible and offer extensive catering facilities. In Vledder (five kilometers) you can do your daily shopping, in Doldersum itself there is a restaurant. Five kilometers from the bungalow is the Bosbad Vledder, where you can take a refreshing dip when the weather is nice. In Frederiksoord you will find a nice museum where you can relive the history of the Colony of Weldadigheid. Other attractions nearby: the war memorial on the heath as well as the hiding place, the Aekingerzand (with swimming lake) and the Shakespeare plays in Diever. At somewhat greater distance are the dolmens in Havelte, Wildlands zoo, TT circuit Assen, Giethoorn (the Venice of the North) and various play and amusement parks.
