Odoorn is located on the Hondsrug in Drenthe. On the Hondsrug and thus around Odoorn there are several nature reserves. Just north of Odoorn - this is where the tent house looks out - are the Odoornerdennen. This forest is located on a former sand drift. Once this forest was created by the farmers to put an end to the nuisance of the drifting sand on the fields. Now it is a beautiful and varied nature reserve. In several places there are still beautiful moors with large juniper bushes. These parts used to be too hilly to reclaim.Just past Odoorn is the UNESCO Global Geopark. Here the story is told of the unique landscape of East Drenthe with a history dating back to the Ice Age, where ice and melting water created the landscape of ridges and stream valleys with the many boulders from Scandinavia. These boulders were used 5,000 years ago by the Hunebed builders to construct their burial monuments, which we now call the dolmens.
