Friesland's landscapes
Friesland consists mostly of water, meadows and sandy dunes. As mentioned above the region consists of 4 national parks. Schiermonnikoog National Park is one of the wildest natural reserves of the Netherlands. Landscape is constantly changing on the island. The park has forests and dunes full of fragrant flowers, the endless beach, a vast salt marsh and mud flats to offer. Many species of birds choose to nest in this location. Lauwersmeer National park was part of Wadden Sea until the government built a dam in 1969, because of fear of flooding. When the waters cleared out and the sea bed came out to light an amazing landscape was created. The park now is a bird paradise with more than 100 species choosing to breed here. If you visit in spring or autumn, you might witness more than 30,000 barnacle geese fly over in one day. You will see stilts, spoonbills and gray phalanges or the bald eagle. The park is also open at night, because of the very little light pollution you can observe the night sky like never before. Drents-Friese Wold National Park is filled with forest, heathland, shifting sands and valley grasslands. In some parts there are wet swamp forests, from which neighboring heathland and peat bogs benefit thanks to the increasing water levels. Be sure to visit the Wadden Sea coast. A hidden coastline with beautiful beaches, picturesque cities and a vast landscape.
Friesland has a lot of streams, rivers, lakes, waterways, ponds, dredging ditches and canals making the region a hotspot for water sport activities. You can take an hour and a half trip to the most westerly island called Vlieland. Be amazed by the beautiful landscape and the amazing array of migratory bird species. The island is more than just sandy beaches though. You can enjoy the lovely forest and dune areas as well. Another island that you can visit is Terschelling. The island takes the second place in size out of all five Wadden islands.
Friesland has many diverse flora and fauna. Some of the forests have been planted there, but others spawn on their own. The willow trees are a perfect example. The forests are about 50 years and provide shelter for many types of wildlife. From May to September, you can enjoy the orchid route in Lauwersmeer National Park, made out of more than 10 orchid species. In order to protect the area becoming one large swamp forest the Forestry Commission has released large grazers in the form of Scottish highlanders and Konik horses. With that help, hopes are that they will prevent further degradation and forestation of the area.
Never a dull moment in Friesland
For the thrill seekers Terschelling provides. You can try coast rafting, speed boating, surfing, windsurfing, bootcamp, traction kiting, blokarting, archery or surf kayaking. Or if a peace and quiet is what you are seeking, sail to Vlieland and choose a remote place for a quick meditation or yoga practice.
Take your best camera or binoculars and go on a long hike while opening your eyes for any rare birds. There are many designated watch towers and huts where you can hide and observe all kinds of colorful bird species. Or rent a bike and go on some of the many cycling trails in this area. You can take a boat trip and explore the sandy coastlines. Activities such as backpack walks, the Low-rope Survival Trail or Studying Owl Pellets are perfect for children’s parties. Alternatively, they can try out paintballing, canoeing or swimming by a lakeside beach.
Friesland has as rich culture as the vastness of the land. Cities like Leeuwarden, Sneek, Harlingen and Bolsward are a must. And don’t forget about the traditional Dutch and world cuisine or Frisian Tapas. There are numerous restaurants in the region, so if exhausted from exploring there is a place for any taste. And after the exhausting day relax in your last minute booked house in Friesland. Light up the barbeque and open a couple of cold beers or snuggle up on the comfy couch with your partner in front of the tv without a single worry in the world.
