Schiermonnikoog National Park is one of the wildest natural reserves of the Netherlands. Landscape is constantly changing on the island. Lauwersmeer National park was part of Wadden Sea until the government built a dam in 1969, because of fear of flooding. If you visit in spring or autumn, you might witness more than 30,000 barnacle geese fly over in one day. You will see stilts, spoonbills and gray phalanges or the bald eagle. The park is also open at night, because of the very little light pollution you can observe the night sky like never before. Drents-Friese Wold National Park is filled with forest, heathland, shifting sands and valley grasslands. In some parts there are wet swamp forests, from which neighboring heathland and peat bogs benefit thanks to the increasing water levels. Be sure to visit the Wadden Sea coast. From May to September, you can enjoy the orchid route in Lauwersmeer National Park, made out of more than 10 orchid species. In order to protect the area becoming one large swamp forest the Forestry Commission has released large grazers in the form of Scottish highlanders and Konik horses.
