Lisbon weekend trip
How about a short trip to one of the most beautiful European capitals? It is a city bursting with life and economic activity. Lisbon has unique architecture, which attracts a number of visitors every year. However, by going out of the city center, devoted nature lovers will surely find what they are looking for – beautiful sceneries, amazing locations and a quiet holiday far away from their usual tasks and responsibilities. In fact, Lisbon is a city of beauty, both natural and man-made.
It is unrealistic to think that Lisbon can show you all of its magnificent characteristics in a weekend. Nevertheless, we have put together a list of our favorite places and those, which according to our experienced team of travelers, really deserve your attention when spending a weekend in the Portuguese capital. Take a look at the accommodation options and choose what fits your needs. We can guarantee that Lisbon is a wonderful weekend trip destination, which will capture you with its charisma!
The nature within the city
Did you know that Lisbon has terrific beaches? If you are really eager to spend some time enjoying the Atlantic Ocean, then opt for Galapos Beach. A set of green hills surround the beach, turning it into a coastal paradise. The water is amazing and the views, especially during sunset, are out of this world!
Monsanto Park is a protected area in the heart of the city! Yes, Lisbon has a nature park within the city. Visitors often come to relax here after a long day or during the weekend taking a walk through this paradise. Its history is interesting as the park was created during the last century when the government applied a reforestation program throughout the city.
The highlight, in our opinion, is the estuary of river Tagus. Tagus Natural Reserve encompasses the largest estuary in the world and the largest wetland in Portugal. Birdwatchers love to come here during the migration periods when thousands of birds rest on the wetland on their way from or to the African continent. Locals love to visit in the autumn, when the flamingoes rest here for a short period before moving south.
Activities in and around Lisbon
The port of Lisbon offers numerous tours, some of which will take you dolphin watching. This is an interesting experience, which you will remember forever. Horseback riding is also a popular activity, especially if you do it on the beaches; it is quite fun, too. For passionate scuba diving and snorkeling, these are offered on most beaches as well.
Additionally, in the region of Lisbon, you can visit the Sintra Mountains, which offer stunning green panoramas. The mountain is home to rich fauna, including foxes, moles, salamanders, a few types of falcon and even some venomous snakes. There are various tourist attractions on the mountains – Pena Palace, the Moorish Castle, Sintra National Palace and so on. They are worth the hike!
