Italy's beauty
Italy’s natural environment is split in six regions: the Italian Apls, the Apulian foreland, the Tyrrhenian foreland, the Po Valley, the Apennines, and the islands. The Italian Alps are mainly dominated by mountain valleys, high peaked mountains, and glaciers. The Apulian foreland consists mainly of limestone and offers large and romantic shores. The Tyrrhenian foreland, located from Florence to Naples is home to the core of the Roman culture and has an Vulcanic nature. The Po Valley is recognized as one of the most fertile regions of Italy, whereas the Apennines consist mainly of dolomite and limestone. The vegetation changes quickly at higher altitudes. The islands, Sicily and Sardinia, attract many visitors with their mountains, sandy beaches, and colorful vegetation.
Italy has a very high level of fauna diversity, with more than 57,000 species which represent more than one third of all European fauna. This is mainly because Italy is in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea and has a very long coastline. The woodlands, mountains, Apennines, and shrubland contribute to a high habitat diversity. 102 species of mammals live in Italy, such as the Italian wolf, the brown bear, chamois, mouflon, lynx, and the ibex. For birds, Italy is an important stop to migrate because it forms a bridge between Europe to Africa. Over 500 species have been recorded with some notable birds such as the hoopoe, snow finch, goshawk, eagle owl, Egyptian vulture, great bustard, and Eurasian nightjar. In all the sea surrounding Italy, and abundant marine life can be found with corals, fish, and other species.
Italy is mainly dominated by a Mediterranean climate and most plant species in Italy belong to the Mediterranean flora, with some western and eastern species as exception (hornbeam or the oriental hornbeam). You can make 3 distinctions when talking about the forests in Italy. Firstly, you have the evergreen vegetation with densely growing plants that, as the name indicates, always have leaves on, which is typically found on the islands or along the coast. The most common plants are olives, cork oaks, junipers, and sage. Secondly, there is the broad-leaved vegetation, such as oaks and chestnuts. This type of vegetation is a characteristic of the mountain region. The last type is the coniferous vegetation which is mainly found in the Alps and high in the Apennines areas, such as larches and firs.
What to do in Italy?
In a country with such mesmerizing nature and enjoyable climate there is definitely no reason for you to get bored on your Italian holiday. Of course, seeing the most famous sights such as the tower of Pisa, the Vatican, Venice, or pretty much the entirety of Rome is on everyone’s bucket list but why Italy has more to offer than just the famous sights. these experiences can be as active as you want them to be; from skiing on the mountain slopes, to hiking though the Alps or swimming in the lakes or sea. You can also choose to relax, taste the Italian kitchen, drink the Italian wine and take a jump in your pool.
If you want spectacular views of hills and the sea and see charming villages you have to walk the cliff path connecting the five villages in Cinque Terre.
