Glamping Portugal
Simple but nice. How can a person not dream of such a vacation?! Going back to nature, reconnecting with it and with yourself without loosing all the comfort. This is what we call glamping. Places to sleep and relax like luxurious tents and caravans, often also called luxurious glamping or safari tents. In such accommodations you can easily enjoy dinner under the stars or breakfast on the grass.
Instead of snakes and bugs, holidaymakers enjoy candles and romance. Apart from England and Scotland, glamping campsites are springing up like mushrooms in other parts of Europe as well. Take a look at our glamping Portugal offers and get ready for the next adventurous holiday!
Nature in Portugal
Portugal is located in southwestern Europe bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and west of Spain. Portugal is a coastal country with nearly 1,800 km, and a total area of about 92,000 sq.km including the Azores and Madeira, of which about 91,500sq.km of land and 500sq.km of water.
Portugal has 5 major rivers; Mondega starts at Serra da Estrela, the highest mountains in mainland Portugal. Douro, Miho and Guadiana rise in Spain and flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The main river Tejo also originates in Spain and meets the Atlantic Ocean near Lisbon and divides the country into two geographically very different regions.
Northern Portugal is mountainous and hilly and is characterized by many small farms and vineyards. Regions in the north tend to be slightly cooler than in the south, as well as more rainfall, allowing the development of more fertile agricultural areas that are prevalent in the north.
In the south, the landscape is dominated by hills and the climate is warmer and drier than in the north. The south of Portugal it is also known as Alentejo, which means "beyond Tejo". In the extreme south of the country is the Algarve region; the dry and sunny area is mainly characterized by fishing and coastal towns, as well as a very popular tourist destinations.
Portugal's coastline is widespread with stunning landscapes and many fabulous beaches; the Algarve is world renowned for its fantastic beaches and beautiful coastline. Another fascinating feature of Portugal's southern coastline is the Ria Formosa, which is a designated nature reserve of over 170sq.km with sandy islands and home to numerous different birds during migration periods in spring and autumn.
The coastline in central and northern Portugal is also spectacular; many kilometers of beautiful white sandy beaches set against a backdrop of stunning cliffs and striking unspoiled nature.
Recreation and entertainment
The Portuguese themselves tend to like free outdoor activities like taking a walk, going to the park or the beach, meeting friends and family for a picnic.
Portugal’s long coastal line and sunny weather gives great opportunities for different kinds of water sports like surfing and sailing. Scuba diving has become popular with a number of attractive sites such as Pelo Negro which is a complex of shallow undersea canyons close to Leça da Palmeira beach not far from Porto. In central Portugal some of the best sites are: Arcanzil, Pedra da Lagoa and Maria Eduarda and there are also many fantastic sites all along the coast of Algarve.
Staying on a water theme, Portugal has some of the largest and most exciting water parks in Europe, most of them based in Algarve. AquaShow near Quarteira , Slide and Splash near Lagoa and Aqualand near Alcantarilha are the biggest.
It is also possible to go whale and dolphin watching both near Lisbon and in Algarve where dolphin watching trips are widely available by many of the bigger marinas. Another opportunity to see dolphins and even swim with them is available at the Zoomarina Park near Albufeira which also offers tame sea lions, a large aquarium, fairground rides, amongst many other things. The Oceanarium in Lisbon’s Expo area is definitely also worth a visit.
Portugal has many beautiful national parks where you can go for walks and experience amazing natural phenomena, rare animals and stunning nature. Here are just a few: Peneda-Geres National Park, Montesinho, North Coast natural Park, Douro River Valley and Rio Famosa. In the area of Serra da Estrela you will find the Estrela Mountains with the highest plateau in Portugal and a popular place to go skiing in the winter.
Quad biking, horse riding, mountain biking and hiking are other great recreational activities that Portugal has to offer. Another popular activity is wine tasting where you can see the vineyards, learn about local wine including production techniques and traditions and of course try some of the lovely Portuguese wines.
If you are in the mood for a good movie, you can do that too. Portugal has many multiplex cinemas all over the country and all foreign movies are subtitled and not dubbed, so even if you don’t speak the language, you can still enjoy a good movie.
Throughout the summer period there are several festivals in Portugal where you can find entertainment for the whole day and night. In the Algarve you can for example go to The Algarve Music festival which is held in May and June with concerts in Lagos, Faro and Portimao.
During July and August many villages and towns hold their annual Sardine festival but the most famous one is probably in Portimao where you can enjoy sardines grilled on open fires whilst you are watching local folk dancing or listening to traditional Fado music. September is the month of the National Folklore festival where you can find lots of traditional dance and music in different venues throughout the Algarve. Lisbon also has many great festivals all year around. In February you can enjoy the carnival where streets are jammed with people in colourful costumes and dancing samba.
Climate and weather
The climate and weather in Portugal is generally excellent, usually neither too hot nor too cold. Portugal has a varied climate from north to south and the weather varies considerably from one region to another, but in general Portugal offers warm and sunny summers, mild winters, and autumn and spring are generally warm, however with some wind and rainfall. Winter in Portugal usually starts in late November and lasts until February. March, April and October are generally very mild and the summer period is a good long period from May to September.
The climate in the Porto region and further north is softened by currents from the Persian Gulf. Summers are sunny and pleasantly warm without getting stiflingly hot. In the regions of Opreto and Beiras, and in particular inland towards Spain, winters are colder than in the rest of Portugal; however, temperatures are still mild compared to the rest of Europe. Snow is possible in Portugal; however, this is rare and mostly occurs in the Serra da Estrela mountains in central Portugal, where the highest point in mainland Portugal is to be found.
The central regions of Portugal, including Lisbon and the Silver Coast, have a mix of Mediterranean and Atlantic climate elements, which means mild winters and hot and dry summers. Especially the regions of central Portugal can get very hot during the summer with temperatures in excess of 30 degrees, while a fresh breeze from the Atlantic cools the coastal areas. The southern part of Portugal is probably one of the sunniest places in Europe, even in winter, making it a very popular holiday destination.
